Honda Motor Company’s popular small car Civic is receiving kind of a mini overhaul with a sporty new feel and this new Civic coupe concept was a pleasant surprise at the New York International Auto Show where the company revealed its plan to start selling this revamped version by Fall this year. Honda is quite hopeful that it will be able to see an increase in sales as the new Civic goes on sale.
John Mendel, executive vice president of Honda’s U.S. sales unit, introduced us to three different versions of the car which will go on sale – the sedan, coupe and the 5-door hatchback. This sporty new look is the company’s move in the right direction as it works to increase younger customers’ interest in the company’s second-best-selling car in the U.S. “I don’t think we were as sporty in this last generation as we once were,” Mendel said. “I still think we have a strong focus on performance and dynamics across our lineup. But what the market is telling us is, particularly millennials and gen Y, is that they want dynamics. They want sporty.”
Though fuel prices have taken a downhill turn, the Civic remains to be an important key sales and profitability point for Honda and also because it becomes an easy entry access for many of the company’s customers.
The development of the new design has been handed over to the U.S. design team since US makes the major chunk of the Civic buyers; around half of the 20 million Civics sold globally are purchased by the US market alone.
Eric Noble, president of the CarLab, says that this new concept is super brilliant as it brings back life into the most popular Honda car. About this new development he said that the “the styling is much more expressive”. He further added that “Design had a much bigger role in this car than any other previous generation Civic.”
